Preparing Your Child for the 11 Plus

The 11 Plus is an exam which takes place every summer across England, Wales, Northern Island and Scotland. It is designed to test students' knowledge of English language, literature and mathematics.

There are four different versions of the exam - one each for England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Each version lasts around 90 minutes. Students take it over 3 days, with the morning session being held on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday.

What You Can Expect for Your Child on Our 11 Plus Tuition Courses

The 11+ test is one of the most important tests you’ll ever face as a parent. It determines whether your child receives Grammar school education. But what happens once your child starts studying for the exam? What are the best ways to prepare your child for success? And how do you know if your child is ready for the 11+?

We asked our tutors working with children aged 7 – 16 to give us some tips. Here are their thoughts:

1. Don't panic

Your child isn't being tested against the entire world - it's just a small part of the overall process. As long as your child is making good progress, there's no reason to worry.

2. Get to know your child

If you're struggling to understand why your child is having trouble learning certain topics, try talking to him/her about his/her interests. For example, if your son loves cars, ask him questions about different types of vehicles. Or if he likes sports, find out more about his favourite team.

3. Find out where your child stands now

When your child enrols on our 11 Plus tuition course, we will:

Our 11+ tutors are trained to provide a high quality teaching experience for students. They will help you understand why it is important to learn and how to do well in exams.

Course Structure

The course structure consists of 3 key areas:

1. The first thing is to get your students to understand that they are going to be learning about the 11 Plus and the exam structure. This will help them remember the exam style throughout the course.

2. Next, we explain how the 11 Plus works. We show them examples of questions from previous years and explain how they work.

3. Finally, we teach them how to solve these questions. We use lots of practice problems so that they can see how to approach the question and then we go through all.

Teaching Methods

The 11+ exam is one of the UK’s most prestigious exams and students must pass the exam to progress onto a grammar school.

Our teaching methods include:

• A range of different activities to suit each child’s learning style

• Activities based around real life experiences

• Extensive use of practical examples and demonstrations

• An emphasis on self-learning and independent work

• Regular feedback sessions to help you monitor your child’s progress

We offer a range of courses for year 4 and year 5 students. To find out more about our programmes please contact us today.

Assessment and Progress Reports

We offer bespoke Tuition plans based on your child’s specific needs and abilities. This includes providing extra help and support where required. Our team of highly experienced tutors work closely with you to ensure your child receives the best possible tuition experience.

Our tutors monitor your child’s progress every week and send out weekly progress reports containing important information about your child’s learning. These reports are sent home with your child and give you a clear picture of how well they are progressing in class and include information such as whether your child is meeting their targets and what areas they require support in.. You can view these reports online. If you want to make changes to your child’s plan we can do this easily too. Just contact us and we’ll take care of it straight away.

Homework

The 11+ exam will generally consist of four parts:

  • English
  • Maths
  • Verbal reasoning
  • Non-verbal reasoning

There will be homework each week, which will include questions about what you've learned during lessons. You'll need to answer those questions correctly to receive full marks.

Reading Comprehension & Vocabulary

As well as quizzes, there will be reading comprehension tests throughout the course. These tests will cover topics covered in the previous weeks' lessons. They're designed to test how much you understand, rather than just recall facts.

Parents should encourage their child to try out different types of books. "We want children to enjoy reading,". "They might find it easier to learn something if they like the story."
